All about our Anya
Monday, July 17, 2006, 01:12 PM
What do I like about Anya? Too many things to list. She is a fantastic little girl.

Here are a couple of pictures of Anya shooting the bow (taken by Bella) and her first horse ride.

It's final

Logan DLJ Smith

Let's get the questions answered right off the bat.

NO, he was not named after the character on Gilmor Girls
YES, those are initials in the middle
NO, they are not in any particular order (they just sound better in that order)
NO we will not be putting periods in between
YES, kids will probably call him 'Deellejuh' but he will have written parental permission to kick their butts.

This is the name, we like it and we're not changing it so if you don't like it, then you will have learn to love it. :)

Just about one month and counting...

We have a name

I will post the name of the new baby (if Judy lets me) tomorrow on the website here.

Why tomorrow? Well, it will build up some anticipation.

Waiting....waiting....

You never know...
Monday, July 10, 2006, 06:06 PM
...who's reading your blog.

I have been amazed a tthe people that I haven't spoken to in years that read my blog (and quite regularly).

This would be a good contest. Who reads this blog who hasn't talked face to face with me for the greatest amount of time? The funny thing is that I can name 5 or 6 of you right off the bat that I haven't talked to in at least two years, but let's make it official. The winner will get either a boy prize or a girl prize -- your choice. The boy prize will likely be something I get donated from work, and the girl prize will be something Pampered Chef.

There you go, bid away.

Do Something Useful With Your Computer
Wednesday, July 5, 2006, 12:50 PM
I have been using Boinc for over a week now and it's actually pretty cool. Here's the deal. It's distributed computing put into practice. That is, projects that can not afford super computers can set up a Boinc server. That server parses out bits and pieces to clients to process and then return to the server. You can install a client on your home computer by downloading the software and then picking your project. You can be involved with everything from Rosetta@Home which "determines the 3-dimensional shapes of proteins in research that may ultimately lead to finding cures for some major human diseases" or Seti@Home which processes signals from outer space (like in the movie/book Contact).

I am hooked up to Rosetta and Prdictor@Home (Scripps) because I have machines that run all the time and they might as well do something useful other than sit there. No, I am not running a Seti client.

My desktop at work runs it via screensaver while I'm at lunch so even that time is not wasted. I just limit the bandwidth to around 3kb and tell it not to run when I'm using the computer. Pretty easy, and in a small way I'm helping with medical research.

Update on the girls...

All are fine. Anya has taken to shooting her bow just about every day. It's just something she likes to do. They spend most of their summer days swimming, helping mommy and reading.

Judy is doing well too. We go to the doctor today to see how the baby is and to get information on the hospital and what we will need to do. My only concern is getting her there in time. She's due in about 6 weeks, but it will probably be more like 4.

Music from my backyard
Sunday, July 2, 2006, 12:06 PM
Sorry that this has taken so long. I need to get an external mic or something, because the tape noise really messes this clip up. I tried a notch filter but it only took out some of it.

What you will hear: birds whistling, wind in the trees, woodpeckers pecking, the creek nearby

What you will not hear: cars, city hum, planes

CLick on the link below to listen...

Rainbow Fire
Tuesday, June 20, 2006, 09:42 AM
Just one more reason to love the northern United States. This is a Rainbow Fire. Apparently it is very rare and only happens under precise circumstances. This picture was taken in northern Idaho about two weeks ago -- pretty close to where we live.

Our rail gun
Saturday, June 10, 2006, 01:12 PM
Anya and I made a mini rail gun today with aluminum foil, two neo magnets, and a 9-volt battery. Here's a video of it in action. Anya filmed and I ran the rail gun.

Our Rail Gun

How can I prove that it's just not rolling downhill? Well I can't, except that it was sloping uphill AND you can notice how it speeds up at the end after slowing down.
